I use a DAW other than Ableton. Will I be able to gain anything from this course?
Yes you will. There will of course be some things I go into which are features unique to Ableton, but the information Gene teaches you is completely transferrable.
I've never made music before - is this course suitable for beginners?
Yes, it is suitable for everyone from complete beginner all the way up to advanced producers.Read below to see how.
This course assumes at least a basic knowledge of Ableton and electronic music production concepts (for example, what an EQ does, how to work with MIDI notes, and things on that level). BUT, because I wanted to make this course accessible to everyone, the course includes a section in which I have compiled a set of introductory videos (not made by me), which I think should give absolute beginners a sufficient base of knowledge where you'll be able to then understand and use the information I provide.
I did not make this course to show you how to do basic things that you can learn easily through youtube. Rather, I made it to teach you the techniques, processes and principles I've developed that form my own unique workflow - things that you can't learn so easily through youtube, and which I have honed and refined over the last 13+ years. In other words, if you want to know how an EQ works or how to use Ableton's Sampler, I'm not going to explain this in great detail, because you can easily find that information for free on Youtube. Instead I'll show you my personal techniques for using one, with explanations on why I do it in a specific way.
That said, while you're watching the course, when I arrive at one of these subjects which I am not going to explain myself because you can easily learn it for free on youtube, there will be a pop up at the bottom of the screen which will direct you to the course's 'Index' section. In the index, each pop up will be accompanied by a link to a youtube video explaining that concept in great depth.
In this way, the course can be used also by beginners, because if you watch the introductory and supplementary videos I've provided, then you will have the knowledge necessary to use Ableton properly, and therefore really learn what I'm teaching.
If you have any further questions about the course, please send them through the website's messenger on the bottom right of the screen.
